China started recovering earlier than most countries, and is projected to be the only country with positive GDP growth in 2020. Strong growth will continue in 2021, when China will account for over one-third of global economic growth.

Meanwhile, India experienced one of the world’s tightest lockdowns and will see a large GDP drop in 2020. The decline has exacerbated inequality, as school closures disrupt meal programmes and prompt dropouts by disadvantaged children. While the economy is forecast to grow from 2021-2022, it may take almost two years for GDP to fully recover.

Out of the countries measured in OECD’s forecast, Argentina will see the biggest GDP decline in 2021. Rising unemployment and inflationary pressures have contributed to the decline.

New Zealand’s GDP loss was similar to the OECD average, despite a larger drop in mobility, from the last quarter of 2019 to the second quarter of 2020. A recovery will partially depend on travel restrictions, as tourism accounted for 20% of the country’s total employment in 2019.

Cases at nursing homes and long-term care facilities

Coronavirus cases have been reported in more than 28,000 nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, according to data collected by The New York Times from states, counties, the federal government and facilities themselves. More than 788,000 residents and employees of those homes have been infected, and more than 106,000 have died. That means that more than 35 percent of deaths from the virus in the United States have been tied to nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

Read more about the isolation, depression and atrophy facing many nursing home residents as lockdowns persist.

“This disease creates the potential for a perfect storm in a long-term care facility — large groups of vulnerable people living together and a highly transmissible virus that may not cause symptoms in those who care for them,” said Dr. Daniel Rusyniak, the chief medical officer for Indiana’s state social services agency.

  • люди старше 60 лет;
    любого возраста;

  • сухой сильный кашель;
  • повышенная температура;
  • мышечная боль;
  • боль при чихании и глотании;

Cases at food production facilities

Early in the pandemic, cases emerged by the hundreds in food processing facilities. The outbreaks disrupted the country’s meat supply and led some of the hardest-hit plants to temporarily close.

In July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 16,000 infections and 86 deaths tied to meat and poultry processing. But those numbers are almost certainly an undercount. Only 28 states provided data to the C.D.C., and many states and food processing companies have refused to provide case totals. Other large outbreaks have emerged on farms, in fruit or vegetable processing facilities and at plants where pet food is made.

Tesla becomes World’s Most Valuable Automaker

2020 was a hallmark year for Tesla. In June, it became the most valuable automaker in the world—surpassing the likes of Toyota, Volkswagen, and Honda.

Tesla’s market valuation climbed over 375% since June 2019. While these soaring figures are one factor behind its rise, others include record Model 3 sales, which prompted market euphoria.

But Tesla’s story is far from over.

The company is now worth more than the largest nine automakers combined, and is set to enter the S&P 500 officially on December 21, 2020. Tesla will be the most valuable company to ever enter the index, ranking as the eighth-largest overall.

How is the virus transmitted?

Although it likely originated in animals, the main route of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 among humans seems to involve human-to-human contact.

According to WHO spokespeople, “Researchers are still studying the exact parameters of human-to-human transmission.”

“In Wuhan at the beginning of the outbreak, some people became ill from exposure to a source, most likely an animal, carrying the disease. This has been followed by transmission between people,” they explained.

The WHO state: “It is possible to catch COVID-19 from someone who has just a mild cough and does not feel ill. Some reports have indicated that people with no symptoms can transmit the virus. It is not yet known how often it happens.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that some recent studies show that people do spread COVID-19 if they are not showing symptoms.

This means that people should adopt careful hygiene practices and practice physical distancing — even around people who do not appear to be sick.

People may begin to experience symptoms 2–14 days after exposure to the virus.

The CDC recommend that people wear cloth face masks in public places where it is difficult to maintain physical distancing. This will help slow the spread of the virus from people who do not know that they have contracted it, including those who are asymptomatic. People should wear cloth face masks while continuing to practice physical distancing. Instructions for making masks at home are available here. Note: It is critical that surgical masks and N95 respirators are reserved for healthcare workers.

The Coronavirus Crash

The S&P 500 erased over a third of its value in under a month—the fastest 30% decline ever recorded on the benchmark index.

As a result, the global tourism industry suffered dramatic losses, with countless cruise ships docked and passenger flights traveling at half-capacity.

This graphic shows the BEACH stocks—booking, entertainment & live events, airlines, cruises & casinos, hotels & resorts—that were most impacted by worldwide travel bans.

While some of these stocks have since recovered, the ongoing impact of COVID-19 is still most widely being felt among companies in these types of industries.

Where did the virus originate?

When humans contract a coronavirus, it typically happens due to contact with an infected animal.

Some of the most common carriers are bats, although they do not typically transmit coronaviruses directly to humans. Instead, the transmission might occur via an intermediary animal, which will usually, though not always, be a domestic one.

The SARS coronavirus spread to humans via civet cats, while the MERS virus spread via dromedaries. However, determining the animal that the coronavirus spreads to humans from can be difficult.

In the case of the new coronavirus, initial reports from China tied the outbreak to a seafood market in central Wuhan. As a result, local authorities closed down the market on January 1, 2020.

However, later assessments have suggested that this market was unlikely to be the single source of the coronavirus outbreak, as some people with the virus early on had no connection with it.

Specialists have not yet been able to determine the true source of the virus or even confirm whether there was a single original reservoir.

When MNT contacted the WHO for comment, their spokespeople emphasized:

Black Lives Matter Protests

“I can’t breathe.” These few words sparked the ongoing flames of a significant movement this summer: Black Lives Matter (BLM).

After the killing of George Floyd on May 25, by police, the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) recorded over 7,750 BLM-linked demonstrations over a three month span.

The nationwide pattern of civil unrest is well-documented, but there’s been no time like the present to demand change. Though images of burning cars and police clashes dominated the headlines, in the end, 93% of the protests were peaceful.

There’s also been a ripple effect, with thousands of similar rallies reported in countries around the world.

Rising Iran–U.S. Tensions

In early January, a U.S. air strike incinerated the car of General Qassim Suleimani, a security mastermind and one of Iran’s most powerful military strategists. U.S. officials claimed that Iran was planning an “imminent” attack.

In retaliation, Iran fired two rockets at U.S. military bases located in Iraq. No one was killed. As tensions escalated, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to try and restrict President Trump’s use of military power against Iran without approval.

Later, in mid-January, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard admitted that it mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet, responsible for the death of 176 people.

About the data

In data for the United States, The Times uses reports from state, county and regional health departments. Most governments update their data on a daily basis, and report cases and deaths based on an individual’s residence.

Not all governments report these the same way. The Times uses the total of confirmed and probable counts when they are available individually or combined. To see whether a state includes probable cases and deaths, visit the individual state pages listed at the bottom of this page.

For more, see answers to our Frequently Asked Questions about the methodology behind how we are collecting this data.

The Times has identified the following reporting anomalies or methodology changes in the data:

June 25:

New Jersey began reporting probable deaths, including those from earlier in the pandemic, causing a jump in the number of total deaths.

June 30:

New York City released deaths from earlier periods but did not specify when they were from.

July 27:

Texas began reporting deaths based on death certificates, causing a one-day increase.

Sept. 21:

Officials in Texas reported thousands of undated, backlogged cases, causing a spike in the state and national data.

Nov. 4:

Georgia began reporting probable deaths, causing a one-day increase.

Nov. 26:

Cases and deaths were lower because fourteen states reported no new data, and six states had only incomplete data from select counties.

Dec. 11:

Texas began reporting probable cases, resulting in a one-day increase of about 44,000 cases.

To see a detailed list of all reporting anomalies, visit the individual state pages listed at the bottom of this page.

The U.S. data includes cases and deaths that have been identified by public health officials as confirmed coronavirus patients, and also includes probable coronavirus cases and deaths when governments report them. Confirmed cases and deaths, which are widely considered to be an undercount of the true toll, are counts of individuals whose coronavirus infections were confirmed by a molecular laboratory test. Probable cases and deaths count individuals who meet criteria for other types of testing, symptoms and exposure, as developed by national and local governments.

Governments often revise data or report a single-day large increase in cases or deaths from unspecified days without historical revisions, which can cause an irregular pattern in the daily reported figures. The Times is excluding these anomalies from seven-day averages when possible.

Read more about the methodology and download county-level data for coronavirus cases in the United States from The New York Times on GitHub.

Beirut Explosion

While the world grappled with numerous biological and natural disasters, human-error led to a deadly explosion that rocked Beirut’s port. The blast was broadcast around the world in real time as people filmed the fire on their devices.

Using satellite data, NASA and NYT mapped the extent of the damage, which claimed 135 lives and affected 305,000 more.

» See the full interactive explainer by NYT

This explosion was the biggest accident of its kind in modern history, triggered by the exposure of combustible ammonium nitrate—a key ingredient in fertilizers—to an open flame due to poor storage. Beyond the human toll, the financial cost of this explosion is estimated at above $15 billion.

Cases at colleges and universities

Some universities have decided to hold most or all classes online, but many others have reopened their campuses, often with extensive procedures and rules governing behavior and testing. In August and September, as the fall term began, college towns saw some of the highest per capita case growth in the country. And by November, as cases surged across the country, tens of thousands more cases emerged at universities.

More than 397,000 cases among students and employees at more than 1,800 institutions have been reported over the course of the pandemic, according to a Times database. At least 90 deaths have been reported, many of them in the spring, and most of them among employees, not students. But at least four students have died in recent weeks after contracting the virus.

Below are the 10 states with the most cases reported on campuses.

How can we prevent infection?

Official WHO prevention guidelines suggest that to avoid contracting the new coronavirus, people should use personal hygiene practices that can keep any virus at bay.

Experts believe that SARS-CoV-2 transmits through respiratory droplets. The CDC recommend maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet (2 meters) from other people to avoid contact with these droplets.

There is currently no evidence that the virus transmits through eating or handling food. People could contract the virus from touching contaminated food packaging, but experts do not believe that this is the main way in which the virus spreads.

For general safety, people should wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds at a time before preparing or eating food.

The CDC recommend wearing a cloth face covering when out in public, such as when going to the grocery store. This is to slow the spread of the virus and prevent its transmission from people who do not know that they have the infection.

Face coverings should cover the nose and mouth and fit very securely. They should include multiple layers of fabric and allow for unrestricted breathing. When removing the covering, people should be careful not to touch the eyes, nose, or mouth.

They should wash the hands immediately after removing a face covering and wash face coverings regularly in the washing machine.

On April 21, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the first COVID-19 home testing kit. Using the cotton swab in the kit, a person can collect a nasal sample and mail it to a designated laboratory for testing.

The FDA specify that the test kit is authorized for use by people whom healthcare professionals have identified as having suspected COVID-19.

Ok I think I’m infected, now what?

  1. Self-isolation at home has been recommended for those diagnosed with COVID-19 and those who
    suspect they have been infected.
  2. Public health agencies have issued self-isolation instructions that include notification of
healthcare providers by phone and restricting all activities outside of the home, except for
    getting medical care.
  3. Do not go to work, school, or public areas. Avoid using public transportation, ride-sharing,
    or taxis
  4. Those who have recently travelled to a country with widespread transmission or who have been in direct contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 have also been asked by some government health agencies to self-quarantine or practise social distancing for 14 days from the time of last possible exposure.
  5. Attempts to relieve the symptoms may include taking regular (over-the-counter) cold medications, drinking fluids, and resting. Depending on the severity, oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, and breathing support may be required.
  6. The use of steroids may worsen outcomes.
